I didn’t expect a tree to comfort me—but it did

Trees
Can a tree be your therapist?

What do trees teach us about emotions?

As an empath, I can feel emotions—mine and others—very easily. But I’ve noticed something: many people see emotions in two extreme ways. Either as a gift that must be controlled… or as a weakness that needs to be fixed.

But what do trees say?

Trees say something very simple: **we are meant to express ourselves.**

It might sound surprising. Why would trees care?

Yet, in my experience, they do. In fact, trees seem to value emotional expression even more than most humans. They are drawn to people who are willing to feel, to express, and to be honest with their emotions.

For trees, emotions are not a problem.

They are a way of building connection.

Unlike humans, who can sometimes shut down or dismiss emotions, trees seem to respond to them. There is a sense that when we express ourselves around them, something softens—both in us and around us.

2. How do trees help you feel again?

I experienced this deeply with Birchy, my neem tree.

One day, I was sitting in a café when I suddenly felt overwhelmed—work stress, a conflicted relationship, and old memories all came rushing in. Normally, I would ask for support from my spiritual guides. But that day, I felt something different.

I felt Birchy call me.

And I allowed it.

For hours, I felt soothed. I cried. I let myself feel everything I had been holding in. Memories of Muddy, my lemongrass plant who is no longer here, resurfaced—and with that came vulnerability.

But something shifted.

I began to feel again.

I also noticed something unexpected: Birchy didn’t just feel like a tree. There was a nurturing presence—both protective and deeply comforting. Almost like a mix of maternal and paternal care.

Another tree I connect with, Juniper, carries a similar energy—steady, grounded, and seemingly endless in its support.

These experiences made me realise something important:

Trees can meet us emotionally in ways we don’t always expect.

Not because they replace humans—but because they offer a kind of presence that is quiet, steady, and non-judgmental.

Many of us slowly disconnect from our emotions as we grow older.

We forget that the very first thing we did when we entered this world was cry.

Over time, experiences—especially painful ones—can make us shut down. We may stop expressing, stop feeling, or feel “numb” altogether.

I’ve felt that too. Moments where I feel empty inside.

And in those moments, I go to trees.

And somehow, gently, I begin to feel again.

If you feel drawn to trees or plants, even slightly, notice that.

That small feeling—whether it’s curiosity, comfort, or something you can’t quite explain—matters.

You don’t need to do anything complicated.

You can simply begin with this:

Go near a tree.

Pause.

And say hello.

That’s enough.

In fact, if you’re reading this right now, consider this your first step.

A quiet hello—

from you…

to a tree.
